Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan was the show-stealer at the inauguration of the second edition of World Cup Kabaddi here tonight, with the actor saying it was a proud moment for him to see that the game he played in his childhood days had touched such heights.
As Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and film star Shah Rukh Khan handed over the baton to the players, the announcement of opening of World Cup Kabaddi by Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal set the pace for nail-biting competition.
The show began with a light and sound show with famous satirist Gurpreet Guggi, in his trademark lingo, giving background of the traditional game and its journey from rural heartlands to Olympics. The countdown video shown on the mega screens on all the four sides of stadium gave the background of the game as the aerial fireworks lit up the sky.
The welcome song - Jee Aayan Noon - resonated through the stadium, followed by teams parading with their national flags before taking up their positions in front of VVIP gallery.
Chief Minister Badal expressed his gratitude to Shahrukh, saying that despite the actor celebrating his birthday tomorrow, he made it a point to fly down here to make the occasion memorable. "Some things in life are important like one's mother tongue. Likewise, Kabaddi is Punjab's sport and Shahrukh came down here on the eve of his birthday made the event all the more memorable," Badal said
