Hockey India today named the 16-member squad for London Olympics. Goalkeeper Bharat Chetri will lead the team with Sardar Singh  as vice captain.

Only two changes were made from the squad that finished third in the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup tournament in Malaysia with striker Yuvraj Walmiki and Rupinderpal Singh being left out, and preferring



veteran Ignace Tirkey and Gurwinder Singh Chandi in their place.

Walmiki and Rupinderpal's axing was on expected lines as the duo had been struggling of late. Walmiki has also not fully recovered from the injury he sustained during the Olympic qualifying event in February though he played in Malaysia

The 16-member squad and two stand-bys were announced by Hockey India (HI) after trials at the Balewadi Sports Complex in Pune conducted June 6-7

Defenders: V. R. Raghunath  , Ignace Tirkey  , Sandeep Singh

Midfielders: Sardar Singh (vice-capt), Gurbaj Singh  , Birendra Lakra  , Manpreet Singh

Forwards: S.V Sunil , Gurwinder Singh Chandi, Shivendra Singh  , Danish Mujtaba , Tushar Khandekar  , Dharamvir Singh  , S. K. Uthappa

Standbys: Sarvanjit Singh  , Kothajit Singh

Indian hockey returned to its roots, the Olympics, on a super Sunday in an emotionally charged up atmosphere at the most appropriate venue for a historic moment – the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium. The eight-time former Olympic champions beat France 8-1 to replace the tears of 2008 with joyful smiles of 2012.

Drag-flick exponent Sandeep Singh played the star role, knocking in five goals, to record his third hat-trick of the tournament, as India pummelled France 8-1 in the title clash of the Olympic Qualifying Men's Hockey Tournament at the Dhyan Chand National Stadium.
India also has at last broken the Major Dhyan Chand National Hockey Stadium jinx by winning the Olympic Qualifying Tournament defeating France 8-1 in the final. Never before India won a title at this historic stadium.
