Famous Punjabi singer Honey Singh may face imprisonment for 3 years if he is found guilty in a case regarding "vulgar lyrics" of his songs.Punjab government on Tuesday received rap on its knuckles from the Punjab and Haryana high court for not taking any action against Punjabi rapper Honey Singh, who is in storm of controversy for singing lewd (vulgar) song. High Court summoned the Honey Singh to respond to the allegations hurled against him by one Uttar Pradesh IPS officer Amitabh Thakur.

The petitioner filed FIR against Singh accusing him for singing song full of "obscene" and anti-women remarks.The IPS officer was quoted as saying, "The lyrics of his songs are vulgar and obscene. One song is called 'Mai hoon balatkari (I'm rapist)'. limits of decency are being violated by such songs. Lucknow police sources informed that FIR against the singer was lodged in Gomti Nagar police station under sections 292, 293 and 294 of the IPC which are related to obscenity offences.

The matter had reached before the HC through a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by NGO called HELP of Nawanshar in Punjab seeking directions to set up some effective mechanism for curbing the menace of obscene/vulgar/lewd songs from the state of Punjab. PIL filed through advocate H C Arora had submitted that all limits of decency are being violated by such songs. Arora referred to provisions of section 294 of Indian Penal code (IPC), according to which singing of lewd/ obscene songs at public places is an offence.

Earlier concert of Honey Singh on New Year eve in a hotel in Gurgaon was cancelled following an online protest against his songs. Also in recent times Jassi Jasraj (Karan Jasbir) strongly raised his voice against the vulgarity and eroticism prevailing in Punjabi music. He protested against the Honey Singh for his vulgar lyrics and videos and called him ‘the king of vulgarity’. Later on Istari Jagrati manch has joined the campaign against many singers who sang vulgar songs.

In Recent times "Istri Jagriti Manch", is quite actively protesting against ''vulgar and sleazy'' songs churned out by a number of Punjabi singers. Keeping up the momentum of their campaign they protested against terming the songs by Honey Singh and Diljit Singh as ''denigration of womanhood,''. They also staged a demonstration outside the Phagwara residence of Punjabi Singer Geeta Jaildar ,against his objectionable songs derogatory to the honour of women. They threatened to intensify their struggle, if the singer did not stop to present vulgarity.

 

It is to mention here that the agitation was sparked by Punjabi Singer Daljit's song "Pandran Saal ton Ghat" (song referred to girl below the age of 15 years) in which vulgar and objectionable comments were passed against girls. It also sparked a hot conversation between Jassi Jasraj and Honey Singh.Dinesh of Speed Records, which recently released Jazzy B and Honey Singh's song also facing flak for vulgarity.but later on Speed Records had apologized and pledged to avoid vulgarity after activists protested outside its office. Like this Many Other Punjabi Singers Like Miss Pooja, Jazzy B, Gippy Grewal, Preet Harpal, Deep Money and many more has faced protest against Vulgarity and some of them have express their apologies too.

As a Critic "Romanticism has always been there in Punjabi folk and other popular songs", but Amar Singh Chamkila had crossed the line and started openly using double-entendres. After his killing, no Punjabi singer sang any vulgar song for around a decade. Critics also say many Punjabi songs depict women as "mere enjoyment objects".

IJM leader Gurbax Kaur Sangha blamed these singers for polluting the culture of Punjab by damaging public morality and cultural values of Punjab. She accused Central and State governments for indirectly promoting such sort of singing.

She warned that if music companies and Punjabi singers fail to stop vulgar and objectionable songs this movement shall take sharp turn. Hundreds of women participated in the protest. The Protesters alleged that a legislation prohibiting indecent representation of women was passed in 1986, but nothing could be implemented till now even after 26 years.

Also Cricket Harbhajan Singh has urged to all punjabi Singers and Lyrics writter to avoid vulgarity in their creations. Here is the complete message.



There has been few steps taken by Punjab Government and Punjabi University  Like

Punjabi University has  boycott singers who promote vulgarity and show women in poor light. University's Punjabi language department has already urged the university administration to ban the shooting of movies and videos of songs of such singers on the varsity campus.Students of University blacked out Punjabi singers known for spreading vulgarity, during the varsity’s annual fete” The decision to boycott the singers had reportedly been taken by the management committee of the festival and students adhered to it.

The outrage over vulgarity has also prompted the Punjab government to set up a censor board to screen their content. Cultural affairs minister Sarwan Singh Phillaur has mooted the proposal in August last year. Also, Punjab transport minister Ajit Singh Kohar had banned drivers from playing "vulgar and provocative songs" in state-run transport buses to prevent accidents in November.

"The Whole objective is to screen the content shown in such videos besides lyrics so that the censored content reaches the public,"

So far All these movement  fail to stop vulgar and objectionable songs r at least reduce it. Moreover Singers are getting media publicity and their songs on video-sharing sites getting millions of hits. It is not effective because we all are equally responsible. For an instant all of us listen/watch such material in every movement, in bus/car (while commuting from office/work), Canteen/Cafeteria (during Lunch or Tea breaks), At Home and last but not least on mobile/laptop. Moreover sometimes we promote it by sharing on Social Media sites or with Friends. So We cannot simply blame Singers and Lyrics writers for such vulgarity,we all have share in it.

Rapper Honey Singh, who was forced to cancel his scheduled New Year's Eve show following protests in the backdrop of Delhi gang rape incident, today sought to wash his hands off the controversy triggered by offensive lyrics in some of his songs.

NGO HELP on Tuesday submitted a complaint to the senior superintendent of police against him over alleged vulgar lyrics of his song. The FIR was registered under sections 292, 293 and 294 of the IPC that are related to obscenity offences. NGO president Parwinder Singh Kittna said the songs of rapper Honey Singh are vulgar and such songs can act as a catalyst in crime against women. He said the song is available on YouTube and police should remove its video from the website as soon as possible.



His song Main Hun Balatkari (I am a rapist), which he now claims he hasn't sung, has come in for severe criticism. The lyrics have been termed offensive towards women by activists, who have started an online campaign against Singh. Singh’s detractors say that some of his songs are misogynistic and promote a permissive and casual attitude to sexual assault

As per Honney Singh's Manager "We did not cancel the show because of this petition and FIR. We cancelled it in the wake of Delhi gang rape issue. This is not the first concert we are cancelling in Delhi after that horrific incident. We had also cancelled our much publicised December 25 event,".

This is not the first incident that Honey Singh involved in controversy for vulgar songs. In recent times Honey Singh was in news for controversy with Jassi Jasraj. Inspite all this he is making new songs day by day , which are super duper hit in market. Looks like many people like his songs, which encourage him to repeat such act again and again.

Now days Jassi Jasraj (Karan Jasbir) strongly raised his voice against the vulgarity and eroticism prevailing in Punjabi music. He protested against the Honey Singh for his vulgar lyrics and videos and called him ‘the king of vulgarity’.

He portrayed Honey Singh as the king of vulgarity and other such singers as his force. “If the king will be punished then other will also learn the lesson” he said. He also said that "projecting women in derogatory light and singing double meaning vulgar songs had become fashion in the Punjab. “Erotica and Vulgarity is selling very easily at the stake of morality and ethics. But now the situation has become alarming and revolution against vulgarity in Punjabi music has started”.The Whole issue started from Song "15 Saal di kudi" which Honey Singh and Diljit Dosanjh, released earlier this year. In that song, it is mentioned that no Girl (Kudi) in Punjab is a fresh Peace (Pavittar) and excite youth for bad behaviour with Girls.

Recently Jassi Jasraj has released National Villager album. The lyrics, music and the rap are by Jassi Jasraj himself. Video is directed by Manna Banwait under the label of Jasraj Records.In National Villager Face to Face song he directly targetted Yo Yo Honey Singh Rapper (Punjabi?).Even before he has done is his album Zanjeer with Honey Singh all together.

Jassi Jasraj also given example of Amar Chamkila and Amarjot who were gunned down in March 1988 for singing double meaning vulgar songs. He also mentioned few other famous singer names and said those also are not in favour of stopping this.

This whole debate has raised few questions like
