Shiv Kumar Batalvi

Shiv Kumar Batalvi was a Punjabi language poet, who was most known for his romantic poetry. He was born in a Saraswat Brahmin family on 23 July 1936 in village Bara Pind Lohtian, Shakargarh Tehsil, Sialkot District (now in Pakistan) to Pandit Krishan Gopal, village tehsildar in the revenue department, and Shanti Devi, a housewife.

"He became the youngest recipient of the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1967, given by Sahitya Akademi (India's National Academy of Letters), for his epic verse play based on the ancient legend of Puran Bhagat, Loona (1965), now considered a masterpiece in modern Punjabi literature, and which also created a new genre, of modern Punjabi kissa. Today, his poetry stands in equal footing, amongst that by stalwarts of modern Punjabi poetry, like Mohan Singh and Amrita Pritam, all of whom are popular on both sides of India-Pakistan border. "

Biography:

In 1947, when he was just 11, his family moved to Batala Gurdaspur district after partition of India, where his shivkumarbatalvifather continued his work as a patwari and young Shiv received his primary education. He completed his matriculation in 1953, from Punjab University, and enrolled in the F.Sc. program at Baring Union Christian College, Batala, though before completing his degree he moved to S.N. College, Qadian, where he joined the Arts program more suited to his persona, though he left that too in the second year. Thereafter he joined a school at Baijnath, Himachal Pradesh to do a diploma in Civil Engineering, here again he left it in the middle.Next he studied for some time at Govt. Ripudaman College, Nabha.

He fell in love with the daughter of the noted Punjabi writer Gurbaksh Singh Preetladi who was married off to a UK citizen because of caste differences between the two. It was during this time that he turned increasingly to alcohol for solace, allegedly writing the poem :"Ajj Din Chhadeya Tere Rang Varga" ("Today dawned colored like your complexion...") while standing outside a "Theka Sharab Desi" [Liquor Vend], waiting for it to open so he could buy his booze. He remained unlucky in love, and bereavement for love loss reflected intensely in his
poetry. In early 1967, he got married, to a Brahmin girl, Aruna, of his parents & family's choosing. According to friends, he only agreed because she had a striking resemblance to his youthful love, and later the couple had two children, Meharban (1968) and Puja (1969).

His writings had always been open about his pronounced death wish, and on 7 May 1973, he died at his father-in-law's residence, at Kirri Mangyal Pathankot, due to liver cirrhosis, a result of chronic alcoholism, aged 36.

Dilbar Singh- 'The Gas man'

You might be surprised that a village in Punjab has underground sewerage system, a separate rainwater drainage system and an bio-gas plant which is supplying gas for 75 household . Yes it is true. Thanks to the vision of NRI Dilbar Singh and his family, the village situated on the banks of the Sutlej River, Bahadurpur village, a hamlet of 75 households in Ropar.

The Union Ministry of Rural Development has awarded village for the Nirmal Gram Puraskar. Dilbar Singh runs a transport company in Dubai and during a visit to Italy he decided to rebuild the narrow and sludge filled streets of his village. “My idea was to create an ideal village with all modern civic amenities. Unconditional support from the villagers helped me achieve that objective,” he says.Dilbar Singh

Sarpanch Ajmer Singh says when the work began, villagers willingly knocked down the walls of their houses to pave the way for wider streets. Except for two cattle yards, all other yards have been moved to the periphery of the village.Even the sewerage pipes have been dumped into three acres of village land from where the water collected is distributed for village farmers to cultivate their lands.

“We don’t want to pollute the Sutlej River with sewage and hence decided to use fallow land for the purpose,” Dilbar Singh added.

In his recents development, in dairy farm he is able to produce 7 quental of milk every day. Even he is utilizing cattle waste to produce biogas. With this gas, whole village is in benefit.

Due to all his development is Dilbar Singh now days know as The Gas Man.

Here are few vidoes explaining details of his developments

Protest Against Vulgar Singing

In Recent times "Istri Jagriti Manch", is quite actively protesting against ''vulgar and sleazy'' songs churned out by a number of Punjabi singers. Keeping up the momentum of their campaign they protested against terming the songs by Honey Singh and Diljit Singh as ''denigration of womanhood,''. They also staged a demonstration outside the Phagwara residence of Punjabi Singer Geeta Jaildar ,against his objectionable songs derogatory to the honour of women. They threatened to intensify their struggle, if the singer did not stop to present vulgarity.

It is to mention here that the agitation was sparked by Punjabi Singer Daljit's song "Pandran Saal ton Ghat" (song referred to girl below the age of 15 years) in which vulgar and objectionable comments were passed against girls. It also sparked a hot conversation between Jassi Jasraj and Honey Singh.Vulgar Singing
Dinesh of Speed Records, which recently released Jazzy B and Honey Singh's song also facing flak for vulgarity.but later on Speed Records had apologized and pledged to avoid vulgarity after activists protested outside its office. Like this Many Other Punjabi Singers Like Miss Pooja, Jazzy B, Gippy Grewal, Preet Harpal, Deep Money and many more has faced protest against Vulgarity and some of them have express their apologies too.

As a Critic "Romanticism has always been there in Punjabi folk and other popular songs", but Amar Singh Chamkila had crossed the line and started openly using double-entendres. After his killing, no Punjabi singer sang any vulgar song for around a decade. Critics also say many Punjabi songs depict women as "mere enjoyment objects".

IJM leader Gurbax Kaur Sangha blamed these singers for polluting the culture of Punjab by damaging public morality and cultural values of Punjab. She accused Central and State governments for indirectly promoting such sort of singing.

She warned that if music companies and Punjabi singers fail to stop vulgar and objectionable songs this movement shall take sharp turn. Hundreds of women participated in the protest. The Protesters alleged that a legislation prohibiting indecent representation of women was passed in 1986, but nothing could be implemented till now even after 26 years.

Also Cricket Harbhajan Singh has urged to all punjabi Singers and Lyrics writter to avoid vulgarity in their creations. Here is the complete message.

There has been few steps taken by Punjab Government and Punjabi University  Like

Punjabi University has  boycott singers who promote vulgarity and show women in poor light. University's Punjabi language department has already urged the university administration to ban the shooting of movies and videos of songs of such singers on the varsity campus.Students of University blacked out Punjabi singers known for spreading vulgarity, during the varsity’s annual fete” The decision to boycott the singers had reportedly been taken by the management committee of the festival and students adhered to it.

The outrage over vulgarity has also prompted the Punjab government to set up a censor board to screen their content. Cultural affairs minister Sarwan Singh Phillaur has mooted the proposal in August last year. Also, Punjab transport minister Ajit Singh Kohar had banned drivers from playing "vulgar and provocative songs" in state-run transport buses to prevent accidents in November.

"The Whole objective is to screen the content shown in such videos besides lyrics so that the censored content reaches the public,"

So far All these movement  fail to stop vulgar and objectionable songs r at least reduce it. Moreover Singers are getting media publicity and their songs on video-sharing sites getting millions of hits. It is not effective because we all are equally responsible. For an instant all of us listen/watch such material in every movement, in bus/car (while commuting from office/work), Canteen/Cafeteria (during Lunch or Tea breaks), At Home and last but not least on mobile/laptop. Moreover sometimes we promote it by sharing on Social Media sites or with Friends. So We cannot simply blame Singers and Lyrics writers for such vulgarity,we all have share in it.

In your opinion what measures should be taken to remove Vulgarity, not only from Songs/videos but from whole Punjabi Culture.
